Free up storage space on your Mac

Utilise the storage-management features of your Mac or free up space in other ways.

Optimise storage infinite

To make more storage infinite available, use the storage-management features of macOS Sierra or later.

  1. From the Apple tree menu  in the corner of your screen, cull About This Mac. So click Storage to run across the amount of storage space available for your data.

  2. Click the Manage push button.

Free up storage space in other ways

  • Manually delete unneeded files by moving them to the Bin and then elimination the Bin. Deleting unneeded music, films and other media tin free up a lot of space, as tin deleting files in the Downloads folder.
  • Delete unneeded emails in the Mail app. To delete junk emails, open Mail service and choose Mailbox > Erase Junk Mail service. To delete emails that yous've moved to the Bin mailbox, cull Mailbox > Erase Deleted Items.
  • Connect an external storage device to your Mac, then move files to that device.
  • Compress files and then that they use less storage space.
  • Make sure that your Mac is using macOS Sierra or afterward, which includes space-saving features, such equally detecting duplicate downloads in Safari; reminding you to delete used app installers; removing quondam and unused fonts, languages and dictionaries; and clearing caches, logs and other unnecessary information when storage infinite is needed.

Cheque your progress

To check your progress while freeing up storage space, rely on the amount of storage space shown every bit "available" in About This Mac or at the top of the storage-management window pictured above.

Other measurements, including measurements in other tools, may calculate storage space differently, or show storage categories such every bit Other, Purgeable, Costless, Other Volumes, Not Mounted, VM, Recovery or System Data. Don't rely on those measurements to empathize how much space is bachelor for your data, or how to make more space bachelor.
